Set amid stately old trees in the historic Druid Hills neighborhood of Atlanta, the long and deep lot of the Sones property provided a few interesting design challenges. Creating privacy for the intown lot topped the homeowners’ wish list, as did creating an entrance plaza that would not only delight guests, but double as both parking and an area for tented events.
Dreams and practicality now coexist in a new outdoor living space that made artistic use of a long driveway approach to the residence. Grand old trees provide a canopy for native plants and historic stone sculptures, which help create petit jardins. Stone paths let visitors enjoy the peaceful repose, while regarding blazing azaleas and ornamental Japanese Red Maples. Overhead structures provide defined space along with architectural appeal.
